Former Disney star Demi Lovato is back in the spotlight after a difficult year that saw her check into a treatment center for emotional and physical issues after a public meltdown.
Now, the 19-year-old star has found success with her new album, Unbroken, and is gearing up for a fall tour.
The “Skyscraper” singer talked to Parade.com about what she’s learned over the past year and what fans can expect from her new tour.
“I’m so excited to get back on the road,” Lovato said. “With this tour, I’ll be playing piano and guitar and dancing to songs from my new album.”
On finding balance while on tour.
“I’m in a much happier and healthier place now, so I’ll be able to decide when I need time off. It’s a different era in my career. I’m sure that if I need time off I’ll be able to speak about it and I’ll take a step back.”
On her first Top 10 Billboard hit, “Skyscraper.”
“When I perform that song, I just try to recall of all the emotions that I felt when I first recorded it, which is a lot. I recorded it during a time in my life when I was going through a lot.”
On deciding to open up about her recovery.
“I just realized that once I went into the treatment center, pretty much anything and everything was going to come out anyway. At the same time, I wanted to help other people who shared my issues.”
On her dedication to her fans.
“I’ve been getting really great responses. Some of my fans have said that because I’ve been able to speak about my issues, that they’re not afraid to speak about theirs, which is an amazing feeling.”
On what people would be surprised to know about her.
“There are a few things! Some silly things like I can touch my nose with my tongue and I used to have a gab in between my two front teeth. A bunch of silly, quirky things like that!”
On the biggest lesson she learned over the past year.
“Just be to be careful who you trust. Sometimes you don’t know who you can and cannot trust. I still learn that over and over again.”
On handling the negative side of fame.
“The best way to deal with that is just to keep your chin up and stay strong and turn the other cheek. Kill ’em with kindness.”
On her plans for the future.
“Over the next year, I just want to continue to tour and have fun with music. Acting will come second. Music is my number one passion and I want to stick to music for a while.
