Demi Lovato needs a guy who can handle “a little bit of baggage.”The 19-year-old pop star tells Glamour magazine that she is very careful about dating after being hospitalized last year for “emotional and physical issues.””[I need] someone who’s not only supportive in my career, but also in my recovery,” she says. “It’s a big responsibility dating me because I come with a little bit of baggage, you know? I’m completely open. I’m honest about the journey I’ve been on, so I definitely don’t take dating lightly anymore.”
Lovato has recently been linked with “That ’70s Show” actor Wilmer Valderrama, who she also dated before their breakup in June. The two were caught kissing early this month, and two weeks ago attended a wedding together — where Lovato caught the bride’s bouquet.
Presumably, Valderrama can handle quite a bit of baggage. The actor, now 31, also dated Lindsay Lohan. While Lovato was vague last year about why she dropped out of a Jonas Brothers tour and entered a treatment facility, she has since talked openly about what happened. She has said that she received treatment for bulimia and self-injury, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder while under care.”I was losing my voice from purging. I was self-medicating. I was not taking medication for depression,” she told Robin Roberts of ABC. “Basically, I had a nervous breakdown.”Lovato says she is doing much better these days.
In her Glamour interview,Lovato seems to imply that ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas might not have been the most supportive mate for her. While talking about writing “Skyscraper,” her ode to second chances, she mentions an “ex-boyfriend who tried to bring [me] down.”
“[The song is about] every person who tried to bring me down,” Lovato says. “Everyone has the bully or the mean girl or the ex-boyfriend who tried to bring them down. For me, I think of the people who really weren’t there for me when I went into treatment. It was a really dark time for me because I had only a few people — I had surrounded myself with so many artificial friendships. It’s about those people.
