From twerking to smoking, it seems like every move Miley Cyrus makes lately sparks some controversy. But there’s at least one person who always has her back.

In a candid interview with Katie Couric on Tuesday (November 19), Demi Lovato opened up about her fellow Disney friend, while admitting she believes the “Wrecking Ball” singer “knows what she’s doing.”

“A lot of artists take that route of shock value, and that’s totally fine and that’s great, but I think she has such an incredible voice that’s overshadowed by some of the things that she’s doing,” Lovato said. The “Neon Lights” singer added, “It’s her journey. She’s having fun; she’s being who she is. But everyone is on their different journeys right now and she’s doing that and she’s having fun and power to her.”

Cyrus and Lovato sparked up a friendship six years ago on the set of “Hannah Montana.” And although their roads to pop stardom have taken different paths since then, both know what it’s like to attempt to shed a child-star persona and be taken seriously as an adult artist.

“I think that the world needs to get over the fact that she was ‘Hannah Montana’ when she was 16. I guess my transition was a little easier because I went straight to rehab. I didn’t twerk, I just went to rehab,” Lovato laughed. “It’s something nobody knows and nobody really knows who I am, and same with Selena [Gomez] and Jonas [Brothers], and everyone that has grown up in front of the public eye, and we’re adults now … we’re all in the process of doing that so go a little easy on us, America.”

During the interview, the “X Factor” judge also talked about herself, saying life “is so awesome right now.” Lovato is busy prepping for her upcoming tour, a new video for “Neon Lights” and she’s just released her first book, “Staying Strong,” which includes an entire year’s worth of quotes and “morning mediations.”

“It’s like all these things are coming together and it’s incredible when you actually put positive energy out there, with the meditation, just five to 10 minutes a day — things come to you, you attract positive energy,” Lovato explained. “And all this came to me when I really started diving in to trying to get in a better place.”
