In a new interview with TMZ Live, Demi Lovato spoke about DMX’s recent overdose, addressing both artists’ histories with drug addiction.
“Anytime that I see somebody OD or even pass away that’s in the public eye, I immediately think, ‘That could’ve been you had you not been putting all this work in the last couple of years of your life,'” she said. “There’s times where I’ve even talked about feeling survivor’s guilt because you do ask yourself, ‘Why am I still here, and why are others not?'”
DMX was rushed to the hospital last Friday after experiencing a heart attack that was triggered by a drug overdose. The 50-year-old rapper’s friends and family gathered outside the New York hospital where he remains on life support Monday night for a prayer vigil.
Lovato recently released a two-part magnum opus about her own 2018 overdose: the YouTube Originals docuseries Dancing With the Devil and a companion album of the same name. She re-created the hospital scene following her OD in a music video for the album’s title track. The “Anyone” singer opened up about the cathartic and “healing” process of filming the video while she broke down on set revisiting the darkest moment of her life.
“It’s a challenging thing to get over, but ultimately I had to realize that every day is a day that someone else doesn’t get,” Lovato told TMZ Live. “Every day that I’m here on this earth is a day that I need to be counting my blessings for and just being appreciative and grateful for. It makes me want to live the best life I can possibly live knowing that others didn’t get the same chance that I did.”
